Change to duration of exams for GCSE Ancient History J198 05 July 2023

As part of our regular review, following feedback from teachers, we're extending the duration of our GCSE Ancient History exams as follows:

      • J198/01 Greece and Persia – we’re changing the time allowed from ‘1 hour 45 minutes’ to ‘2 hours’
      • J198/02 Rome and its neighbours – we’re changing the time allowed from ‘1 hour 45 minutes’ to ‘2 hours’

This change affects the Summer 2024 exams and all future series.

We’ve amended pages 5 and 22 of our GCSE Ancient History specification (version 1.5) to reflect this change. We've also amended our sample assessment materials (SAMs) for J198/01 and J198/02.

You can view and download the amended specification and SAMs from the GCSE Ancient History qualification page on our website, and from Teach Cambridge.

We’ve not changed the content or structure of our qualification.

Please make sure your students are aware that the time allowed for the GCSE Ancient History exam papers in summer 2024 is 2 hours. The past papers on our website will not be amended and will continue to show the previous exam time duration of 1 hour 45 mins.

The final timetable for the GCSE summer 2024 exams is now available to download from our website.

If you have any queries about this update, please call our Customer Support Centre on 01223 553998 or email classics@ocr.org.uk.
