Updated sample assessment material for A Level English Language and Literature H474/03
23 February 2023
To provide clarity for students, we've updated the sample assessment material for Component 03: Reading as a writer, writing as a reader (H474/03).
In Section B, the opening text for Question 3 (3a) now reads:
Choose one of the storylines below to develop as the opening of a narrative.
Write your narrative, making your own choices about the story’s starting point and linguistic techniques. You are writing the opening to a narrative and can use any one of the bullet points as the beginning of your story. You are not expected to write the full story.
You should write approximately 500 words.
We've made this small change to make sure students are clearer on the expectations of their responses. The updated text reflects how the live exam paper will look from summer 2023 onwards.
We've also changed the numbering of Q3 and Q4, to Q3a and Q3b, to highlight for students the relationship between these questions.
Please note, we have not changed the fundamentals of the question and no additional preparation is required for your students.
In our mark scheme for summer 2023, we've also included additional guidance for examiners to ensure consistency when considering responses to this question. There is no change in the approach to marking.
You can view and download the updated sample assessment material, version 1.2, from the Assessment section of the A Level English Language and Literature qualification page. It is also available to download from Teach Cambridge.
