Formulae and equation sheets for assessments in 2024 12 January 2024

This information has been superseded by our subject update published on 4 December 2024.

Following a public consultation, the Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual have confirmed full equations and formulae sheets will be provided for GCSE Mathematics, GCSE Physics, and GCSE Combined Science exams in 2024 only. Formulae sheets will also be provided for our Level 3 FSMQ Additional Mathematics qualification. We've provided further details below.

      GCSE (9-1) Mathematics J560

In the June 2024 and November 2024 exams for GCSE (9-1) Mathematics J560, students will be given a formulae sheet alongside each of the question papers.

Separate formulae sheets will be provided to Foundation tier and Higher tier students, as appropriate. The Higher tier formulae sheet includes additional formulae.

You can view and download the Foundation tier formulae sheet and Higher tier formulae sheet from:

      • the Assessment section of the GCSE (9-1) Mathematics qualification page on our website.
      • the Assessment > Exams > Question papers and mark schemes section on Teach Cambridge.

To make sure students are familiar with the appropriate sheet for their tier prior to the exams, teachers can use the formulae sheets in teaching and mock assessments once they are available.

Students will be given a clean printed copy in each exam.

Formulae that have been provided in questions in previous years (eg curved surface area of a cone, surface area of a sphere, volume of a cone, volume of a sphere and kinematics formulae) will continue to be provided, as required, in questions on our GCSE (9-1) Mathematics question papers in 2024. This means:

      • you can use our GCSE (9-1) Mathematics past papers, alternative papers and practice papers with the 2024 formulae sheet, to give current students a mock exam consistent with the question paper approach to be used in 2024.
      • subsequent years will be able to use the 2024 question papers (without the 2024 formulae sheet) as part of their preparation.

Level 3 FSMQ: Additional Mathematics 6993

In the June 2024 exam for Level 3 FSMQ: Additional Mathematics, students will be given an extra formulae sheet alongside the question paper.

You can view and download the extra formulae sheet from:

      • the Assessment section of the Level 3 FSMQ qualification page on our website.
      • the Assessment > Exams > Question papers and mark schemes section on Teach Cambridge.

To make sure students are familiar with the formulae sheet prior to the exams, teachers can use it in teaching and mock assessments once available. Students will be given a clean printed copy in each exam.

The formulae that are provided as standard for FSMQ (eg expansion of the binomial series, binomial distribution, trapezium rule and the kinematics formulae for variable and constant acceleration) will still be provided at the front of the question paper. This means:

      • you can use our practice papers and past papers, with the extra formulae sheet, to give students a mock exam consistent with the question paper approach to be used this year
      • subsequent years will be able to use the 2024 paper, without the extra formulae sheet, as part of their preparation.

The formulae included on the extra formulae sheet are the same as those on the formulae sheet that will be provided to Higher tier students in the 2024 GCSE (9–1) Mathematics exams.

      GCSE (9-1) Physics J249, J259 and GCSE Combined Science J250, J260

In the June 2024 exams for GCSE (9-1) Physics and GCSE (9-1) Combined Science, students will be given a revised data/equation sheet as an insert in the question paper. The sheet will include all of the physics equations from the specification.

You can view and download the 2024 sheets from below:

      GCSE (9-1) Gateway Science Suite

      • Physics A J249 01/02/03/04 – equation sheet
      • Combined Science A J250 03/04/09/10 Chemistry – data sheet
      • Combined Science A J250 05/06/11/12 Physics – equation sheet

GCSE (9-1) Twenty First Century Science Suite

      • Physics B J259 01/02/03/04 – equation sheet
      • Combined Science B J260 02/06 Chemistry – data sheet
      • Combined Science B J260 03/07 Physics – equation sheet
      • Combined Science B J260 04/08 – data and equation sheet

You can also view and download the 2024 sheets from the Assessment section of each qualification page listed below and from the Assessment > Exams > Question papers and mark schemes sections on Teach Cambridge.

To make sure students are familiar with the data/equation sheets prior to the exam, teachers can use them in teaching and mock assessments now.

Students will be given a clean printed copy in the exam.
