Qualification adaptations: back to ‘normal’ in 2023
10 May 2022
The Department for Education and Ofqual have confirmed that the 2022 adaptations for AS, A Levels and GCSEs will not be taken forward for the next academic year given that public health restrictions are no longer in place.
This confirmation will enable schools and colleges to plan teaching for 2022-2023 based on full subject content coverage.
Adaptations not being carried forward include:
- The range of adjustments made to non-exam assessment, fieldwork and practical science
- The range of adaptations made to GCSE English literature, history, ancient history and geography including topic and content choice
- The range of adaptations permitted for vocational and technical qualifications taken alongside or instead of general qualifications, as determined by individual awarding organisations.
Whilst there is a clear intention to return to pre-pandemic assessment arrangements as quickly as possible, the DfE and Ofqual will continue to monitor the impact of the pandemic and evaluate the approaches made for grading, advance information and exam aids in 2022 before making any further 2023 announcements.
