Ofqual has published a consultation on draft guidance for awarding organisations (AOs) in relation to appeals.

As announced earlier by Ofqual, students will be able to appeal – through their school or college – if they believe the process this summer was not followed correctly. Schools/colleges themselves can appeal if they believe something systemic has gone wrong in relation to their results. This new consultation covers the information AOs must provide to centres considering an appeal and further explains the circumstances in which an appeal might be allowed because the wrong data has been used.

Following investigation, Ofqual has decided that it is not necessary to develop an additional ground of appeal where a centre has experienced a demographic change.

This consultation is likely to be of most interest to AOs who must comply with the new appeals regulations, to centres considering appealing against calculated results this summer, and to students who might ask centres to make such appeals.

Separately and by the end of July, Ofqual will be producing a guide for students that sets out how their grades were calculated this year and the options available if they believe their result was not properly produced.

The deadline for responses to the consultation is 14 July 2020.
