November re-sit entries drop to pre-pandemic levels
25 November 2022
The total number of entries for both GCSE English and GCSE maths re-sits has decreased by 10% on the 2021 figure according to the latest statistics from Ofqual.
Entries for both subjects total 102,405 in November 2022 compared with 114,040 in November 2021. This year’s figure is similar to the number of re-sit entries seen pre-pandemic in 2019.
English language entries decreased by 7% (from 50,345 in 2021 to 46,900 this year) and maths entries decreased by 13% (from 63,695 in 2021 to 55,500 this year).
As in previous years, the majority of entries in GCSE maths were for the foundation tier (95%).
Year 12 entries decreased by 7% to 60,395, and year 13 entries decreased by 12% to 41,980.
Ofqual warns against making comparisons with November entries in 2020 and 2021 when alternative arrangements, such as widening the scope of entries to the series, were in place during the pandemic.
