GCSE English and Maths entries increased for November exams

Entry figures for GCSE English and Maths saw a significant rise in autumn 2020.
The total GCSE entries in English Language and Mathematics increased by 20% in November 2020 to 131,300 (109,495 in 2019).
Entries in maths increased by 29% and entries in English language increased by 11%.
Entries by year 12 students increased slightly (up 4%) but there was a large increase in entries by students in year 13 and above (up 37%).
As in previous years, the majority of entries in GCSE Maths were for the foundation tier (93%).
Traditionally the November series is a resit opportunity but in 2020 exams were available to students who did not have the opportunity to access a grade in summer 2020 or who wanted to improve their grade.
