2023 arrangements confirmed for GQs
03 October 2022
The DfE and Ofqual have confirmed the arrangements for exams and assessments in 2023.
- Grading will return to results in line with those in pre-pandemic years with some grade boundary protection for the 2023 cohort of students who will have experienced disruption to their education
- Formulae and equation sheets will be provided for GCSE maths, physics and combined science. Ofqual has launched a short consultation on the potential impacts of this decision.
- Advance information will not be provided.
- Content: The DfE confirmed earlier this year that schools and colleges will teach the full content of qualifications to students taking exams in 2023. 2022 arrangements for topic and content choice in selected GCSEs will not be carried forward.
- Evidence: A new DfE/Ofqual consultation has been launched on guidance to centres about gathering evidence on student performance to support resilience in the GQ system, in the unlikely event that evidence will be needed to inform Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs). The guidance proposes schools and colleges gather evidence in a way that aligns with their normal arrangements for preparing students for exams.
- Non-exam assessment: Ofqual had already announced earlier this year that pre-pandemic arrangements for NEA, fieldwork and practical science will be reinstated.
- Timetabling: The Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) is consulting separately on exam timetabling and spacing.
- Results days: These will be on 17 August 2023 for A/AS Levels and 24 August 2023 for GCSEs.
- Special consideration: Where a candidate was absent from an exam or assessment in 2022 for an acceptable reason, they could receive a grade as long as they had completed at least one entire component of a qualification. This will now be adopted for all future exam series.
- VTQs: Ofqual does not expect any further adaptations to be used in VTQs. For VTQs used alongside or instead of GCSEs and A Levels, Awarding Organisations are expected to take account of the approach to grading in GQs so that students taking VTQs are not advantaged or disadvantaged in comparison.
